Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized to promote activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware through her mother. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the garbage belonging to one of juries. Due to her work she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Her name is associated with a well-known actress who was in American Experience (1987), A More Perfect Union (2009), and other films. Autumn has played the roles of Rose and Anna Payne for A More Perfect Union.

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16 1937 - 17 August, 2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer famous for her part in the role of Batgirl in the 1960s' television series Batman as well as her role as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969).
